I’m Ben. Hi there.
I’m 30 years old, and just relocated to Halifax, NS. I got my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at Mount Allison University in 2006. I have been blogging continuously since 2001, and as I have gotten older, I’ve wanted a blog that was more a reflection of who I was as opposed to a mask I hid behind. I opened blog after blog in an attempt to find my voice, but ultimately decided I needed to dispense with the cute nicknames and specializations.
I operate a separate weblog on pop culture called Existentialist Weightlifting. I take an almost scholarly interest in the history of Saturday Night Live, but I enjoy a lot of television in general. Not so much reality shows, but there are so many shows I’ve gotten into over the years, particularly ones with good ensemble casts. I like that television allows the relationships between the characters to draw out. I’m also a voracious listener of music, and have spent a lot of money over the years in search of the right lyric or bit of musical arrangement to astound me. I enjoy film and the written word as well, but still need to make a bigger dent in the piles of unread books and unwatched DVDs I have. Music’s easier to digest.
I write and take photographs. I love to travel; part of this may be because I’ve lived in so many different places when growing up. If I stay in the same location for a few years without a chance to travel far, I get restless. I’ve been as far east as Cape Breton and as far west as Saskatchewan, and hope to get to Newfoundland, Alberta, B.C., and the territories. I’ve been through a few of the States some time ago but need to get my passport before I go again. I really would love to make it to Europe someday.
I grew up in the Presbyterian Church but do not consider myself particularly religious, and am often critical of fundamentalist religion influencing government. I believe in defending the arts and human rights. It should also be noted that any opinions I may post on this blog do not necessarily reflect those of my employers past, present or future..
Feel free to contact me directly through e-mail at bjdwsm [at] gmail [dot] com. I love getting e-mail and usually try to send a reply quickly. If it takes a while it’s usually because I want to make sure my reply lives up to your e-mail (yes, I am a bit of a perfectionist).
